Constipation is a common problem that causes difficulty in having a bowel movement. The bowel movement may be:
- Too hard
- Too small that there’s a frequent need to stool
- Difficult to pass, taking more than 2 minutes to come out
- Only occur fewer than 3 times per week
- Pain in the rectum or cramping
- Small amount of blood on wiping
The frequency of bowel movements will vary person to person. However if there is a change or reduction in frequency, this may be constipation.
Constipation may be a result of:
- Poor diet
- Lack of activity
- Side effect of medication
- Disease of the digestive system
Basic steps to help improve bowel movements include:
- Eat more fiber, including green leafy vegetables
- Drink at least 2 Litres of water (unless you have underlying renal or heart disease)
- Get at least 30 minutes of cardio daily
- Don’t hold your stool, go when needed
Consult with a healthcare provider today to make sure your symptoms are not secondary to any other underlying condition.
