Bursitis is inflammation or swelling and pain next to a joint. Common areas where bursitis can occur include the elbow, knees, shoulder, and hip. It can also occur around other joints in the body.

Bursa is a fluid filled sac that sits near a bone and cushions and protects nearby tissue. These sacs or “bursae” are found in several locations in the body. Bursitis occurs when the bursa gets irritated and inflamed. The cause for the irritation and inflammation may include:

  • Getting hurt near a bursa
  • Infection that spreads to a bursa
  • Sitting on a hard surface or staying in a position where there’s constant friction on the bursa for a prolonged period of time
  • Moving the joint over and over again in the say method, over a short period of time – Having a type of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, that can affect the joints and bursae

Symptoms of bursitis may include:

  • Difficulty with range of motion at the joint
  • Swelling or edema
  • Pain at the joint

A bursa can get infected if the overlying skin gets a cut from, for example, scratching. An infected bursa may cause fevers and the bursa to appear:

  • Red or erythematous
  • Warm to the touch
  • Pain and tenderness to the touch
  • Swelling or edema
  • Body Aches or fatigue

Please contact a healthcare provider to confirm whether or not the bursitis is infected. If infected, antibiotics will need to be prescribed. Sometimes an incision and drainage procedure has to be performed.
